Project Esther: Empowering women and families in Ōtautahi Christchurch

For nearly three decades, Project Esther has been a lifeline for women and families in Ōtautahi Christchurch. This grassroots organisation provides a range of practical services, from emergency accommodation to drop-in spaces where women can connect and access much-needed resources.

One of their standout initiatives, the Rawa Pods, offers free household goods, clothing, and essential sanitary products, helping to alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by those in need. Last year alone, over 700 women and families visited the Rawa Pods, highlighting the significant role Project Esther plays in their community.

"For me and my family, using the Rawa Pods has been a huge blessing. Having just come out of jail again with nothing and not having much money on the WINZ benefit, you have to choose between something nice or a necessity, like a fridge. Being able to get nice clothes and sanitary items, things we can’t afford, has been such a blessing." Rawa Pod user.

The organisation’s commitment to equity is further demonstrated through its Living Wage accreditation which ensures staff and volunteers are valued and supported.

The Period Place is proud to support Project Esther through donated disposable menstrual products helping to ensure everyone has access to basic hygiene products.

Support and votes through One Good Kiwi, matched by a product donation from U by Kotex, will directly benefit Project Esther’s mission to uplift women and their families across the community.
