It's time to debunk those old wives' tales and myths about periods.
If there’s one thing that should be common knowledge by now, it’s how periods work… but somehow, we’re still dealing with a fair bit of misinformation. From old wives’ tales to flat-out nonsense, period myths can make people feel confused, embarrassed, or even scared of their own bodies. So, let’s set the record straight and bust some of the biggest myths about menstruation!
🚫 Myth #1: You can’t get pregnant on your period
💡 Fact: You absolutely can. While it’s less likely, sperm can stick around in your body for up to five days, and if you have a shorter cycle, you could ovulate soon after your period ends. So, if you’re sexually active and not trying to get hapū (pregnant), protection is always a good idea - no matter what time of the month it is.
🚫 Myth #2: If you use a tampon, you’re not a virgin anymore
💡 Fact: Virginity is a social concept, not something a tampon can change. Tampons (and menstrual cups!) go into the vagina to absorb or collect blood, but they don’t “take away” virginity. Some people have a hymen that stretches or tears over time - sometimes from exercise, bike riding, or just existing. Your body = your business.
🚫 Myth #3: You shouldn’t exercise on your period
💡 Fact: Exercise can actually help with period pain! Moving your body boosts endorphins (your body’s natural painkillers) and improves blood flow, which can ease cramps. That said, if your cramps have you curled up in a blanket burrito, that’s valid too. Listen to your body and do what feels right for you.
🚫 Myth #4: Period blood is “dirty”
💡 Fact: Nope! Period blood is just regular blood, plus some uterine lining. It’s not “dirty” or “impure.” So, let’s ditch the stigma and respect the magic of our bodies.

🚫 Myth #5: If your period isn’t regular, something is wrong
💡 Fact: Periods can be unpredictable - especially in the first few years of menstruating. Stress, diet, illness, and hormonal changes can all affect your cycle. That said, if your periods are super irregular, extremely painful, or suddenly different from usual, it’s worth having a kōrero with a doctor to rule out conditions like PCOS or endometriosis.
🚫 Myth #6: People who menstruate shouldn’t go swimming
💡 Fact: If you feel up to it, you can absolutely hit the ocean, pool, or even a spa while on your period. Tampons, menstrual cups, and period swimwear make it easy to swim without stress. Also, in case you’re wondering - sharks aren’t drawn to period blood any more than they are to a small cut.

🚫 Myth #7: Period synchronisation is a thing
💡 Fact: The idea that people who live together sync up their cycles is a popular belief, but research doesn’t really back it up. While your period might sometimes overlap with your flatmate’s or bestie’s, it’s more likely just a coincidence. Your cycle is unique to you!
Why This Matters
Misinformation can lead to shame, confusion, and even a lack of access to proper healthcare. Knowing the facts about menstruation helps us challenge stigma, normalise conversations about periods, and ensure that everyone has the knowledge they need to manage their cycle with confidence.
